In memory of the 215 children found in unmarked graves at Tk’emlups te Secwépemc residential school, we invite Guovdageaidnu residents to gather & to stencil 215 komsekullar* on the wall of the local elementary school (mánáidskuvla) before it is torn down. Sámi children also resided there, forced to learn and speak Norwegian away from their parents, in Norway’s own version of residential schooling. Look! It’s me! I went to a party! 😳 😂 I had the idea yesterday that I should write a children’s book called The Littlest Extrovert. Evla (8) is a people person. She loves parties, she loves making people laugh, she’s got great intuition for what people are feeling and needing. But everyone else in the immediate family (me included) is an inny. We are perfectly happy to be home all day, working on our separate things, content to know that eventually we’ll have to walk into the kitchen and say hi to each other. Evla, though… more than once she’s moaned in frustration after being told I’m working on something and don’t want to be disturbed, saying, “But Tiyo is reading and Papa is working and you’re working and and and I WANT TO TALK TO YOU.” We deal with this difference by talking about it, mostly. We’re open about the kids having different needs, which are constantly changing, and trying to figure out how to meet them: Evla goes to an after-school program during the year, and Tiyo does not; Evla REALLY needed a big 8th birthday party (or three) and Tiyo preferred just to have dinner with his family. I hope that this will help Evla to feel good about her need for people and Tiyo to feel good about his need for quiet, darkened rooms. 😂 But this last week, he’s been in a science summer camp and she’s been home with us. I have taken to sending her outside, jokingly telling her, “Don’t come back until you’ve talked to someone!” 🤣 🤣 🤣 We are all different. Love this girl. And you know who else I love? Artist @sofiashustudio! We first met Sofia when she was exhibiting at an art fair called Booze And Pancakes, or something like that. She was the only good artist there and we convinced her to invite us into her home, where we detoxed from the booze and pancakes with vegan lattes and, yes, copious amounts of water. My Sámi Allaskuvla MA thesis research into the ways that Sámi journalists navigate sexual violence (both reporting about it and, often, surviving it) is live! Five out of six female Sámi journalists I interviewed had experienced sexual harassment at work—and two of the three male journalists I interviewed had witnessed a female employee being harassed! And yes, they had a lot to say about it. 👏 Check out the link in my bio for a brief presentation, some recent press coverage, and the paper I’m working on now. CW: colonial violence/residential schooling The komsekula or "šiella" (protector) is a pendant traditionally hung by Sámi people to protect their infants from nefarious spirits in the underworld. It protects them from being taken. I've been trying to process the news that the unmarked graves of 215 children were found on the grounds of a residential school in Canada last week. It's not that I didn't know that babies—beloved children—had been stolen by Canada. I knew. We all knew. Most of these schools have graveyards attached to them. It's not a secret. Maybe because it's the first time in my 10 years of motherhood that I've learned about a hidden mass grave of children in Canada, it hits me differently. Or maybe because I live in an Indigenous community that also experienced compulsory colonial residential schooling. A different history (fewer deaths, for one thing) but it’s left its mark. And the school is still there. Young Sámi children in nightgowns woke up in dormitories above the classrooms my kids learn their AÁBCČs. The school is still there, for a limited time only. It's going to be torn down this summer, to make way for a state-of-the-art facility in which no child will ever be forced to live away from her parents, in which no child will be beaten, in which no child will ever be told not to speak Sámi. To me, every child is born with a komsekula: their total unmistakable vulnerability. The absolute moral imperative to protect, nurture, and care for a being so small and so defenseless. Children put in residential schools weren't taken by spirits of the underworld. They were taken by adults who breathed and moved and believed in their own white superiority. Residential schooling has left its mark on Indigenous peoples around the world. I'm talking to friends about ways to memorialize each of those 215 children, here in Guovdageaidnu. I see it as a necessity for me as a settler Canadian, and as a mother. But also a chance to acknowledge experiences of residential schooling in Norway, too.
